Modern French Formal - Preston Hollow
Taking our cue from some of the great gardens in Europe, our design accentuates the architectural detail of this home.
Situated within the prestigious Preston Hollow neighborhood of Dallas, this estate transformation demonstrates Original Landscape Concepts' ability to merge timeless European garden principles with modern outdoor living. The project began with a traditional 1960s red brick residence and evolved into a complete landscape design-build renovation that redefined the character and functionality of the entire property.
The homeowners envisioned an environment that would feel elegant, organized, and welcoming while maintaining a strong connection to the property's mature natural setting. Original Landscape Concepts responded with a comprehensive master plan that transformed the estate into a collection of interconnected outdoor destinations designed for entertaining, relaxation, and year-round enjoyment.
The arrival sequence establishes the tone for the entire property. A formal circular auto court creates a powerful first impression while reinforcing the symmetry and order associated with classic French estate design. Carefully organized planting beds, architectural hedges, and layered landscape elements provide structure while softening the scale of the residence.
Beyond the home, the landscape unfolds through a series of thoughtfully crafted outdoor rooms. Existing grade changes were transformed into usable living space through the construction of engineered retaining walls and elevated terraces that create multiple entertainment plateaus throughout the property. These terraces establish distinct destinations while maintaining visual continuity across the estate.
A complete pool renovation serves as the centerpiece of the backyard experience. Designed as both an architectural and recreational element, the pool anchors a sophisticated outdoor living environment surrounded by custom stonework, formal plantings, and elegant gathering spaces. Water features, clean geometric lines, and carefully framed views create a resort-inspired atmosphere while remaining consistent with the overall design language of the estate.
The surrounding entertainment areas were designed to accommodate both intimate family gatherings and larger social events. Spacious terraces, structured garden spaces, and shaded retreats allow the landscape to function as an extension of the home's interior living spaces.
One of the most distinctive elements of the project is the culinary cutting garden. Inspired by traditional European estate gardens, this productive landscape provides fresh herbs and seasonal ingredients while contributing texture, fragrance, and visual interest throughout the year.
A secluded garden shed retreat further enhances the estate experience, offering a destination that feels both practical and charming. Nearby, a dedicated fire pit gathering area creates a comfortable setting for evening entertainment while providing an intimate counterpoint to the larger outdoor living spaces.
The planting design played a critical role in balancing formal structure with the natural beauty of the surrounding site. Full-skirt evergreen trees were selected to establish a park-like framework that seamlessly transitions between the organized garden spaces and the property's mature woodland character.
Throughout the landscape, carefully curated collections of Japanese Maples and Flowering Dogwoods introduce seasonal color, texture, and architectural interest. These specimen trees were strategically positioned to frame views, highlight focal points, and create moments of discovery throughout the garden experience.
Today, the property stands as a showcase of luxury landscape design and construction in Preston Hollow. Through thoughtful planning, expert craftsmanship, and a commitment to timeless design, Original Landscape Concepts transformed an aging residence into a modern French-inspired estate that blends formal elegance, resort-style outdoor living, and the natural beauty of the North Texas landscape.
