Historic Conservation – Lakewood Cape Cod Garden Estate

Lakewood, Dallas, TX

Preserving historic character through timeless landscape design-build.

Every landscape tells a story. For this historic Lakewood residence, our objective was never to erase the home's history, but to celebrate it. The original linear-cut stone architecture became the foundation for a thoughtful landscape design-build transformation inspired by the quiet elegance of Cape Cod, Martha's Vineyard, and classic East Coast estates.

Rather than overwhelming the architecture, our team carefully composed a series of outdoor spaces that feel as though they have always belonged to the property. Every decision—from grading and hardscape placement to plant selection and construction detailing—was intended to preserve the home's authenticity while giving the estate an entirely new life.

The arrival sequence begins with an expansive front lawn of Palisades Zoysia, establishing a park-like foreground that immediately conveys openness and restraint. A crushed limestone guest parking auto court blends naturally into the landscape rather than reading as pavement, allowing the space to function as both arrival court and garden.

To preserve neighborhood openness while creating privacy, we framed the property with carefully positioned Live Oaks, Brodie Cedars, Blue Cypress, and Nellie R. Stevens Hollies. Existing mature trees were protected throughout construction and became integral design elements, providing scale, permanence, and seasonal character.

An offset entry garden welcomes visitors with intimate seating areas and layered perennial plantings reminiscent of an old Cape Cod cottage. Hydrangeas, Azaleas, Rose Creek Abelia, Wood Ferns, Autumn Ferns, Ajuga, and carefully curated seasonal perennials soften the stone architecture while providing year-round texture and color.

Behind the home, the landscape transitions into a calm outdoor living environment. A uniform row of Eagleston Holly creates a dense evergreen backdrop that screens neighboring homes and overhead utilities, allowing the compact rear property to feel considerably larger. The fence was finished in a soft muted green stain, intentionally disappearing into the landscape and reinforcing the peaceful garden setting.

The swimming pool continues the natural palette through soft green interior tile, contrasting beautifully against warm limestone coping and pool terraces. The restrained material selections allow water, planting, and architecture to work together without competing for attention.

Throughout the project, our design-build team carefully orchestrated grading, drainage, construction detailing, masonry, planting, irrigation, lighting, and installation to ensure that every element contributes to a unified experience. Nothing feels added; everything feels discovered.

The result is a landscape that respects the home's heritage while creating an inviting estate garden that will continue to mature gracefully for generations—a hallmark of Original Landscape Concepts' philosophy that exceptional landscape design-build is measured not only by beauty on the day it is completed, but by how naturally it belongs to the property for decades to come.
